Doing the Mixed-Race Dance: Negotiating Social Spaces Within the Multiracial Vietnamese American Class Typology
The most interesting thing about this article is alternative to "dancing the dance" for those that choose not to identify with their ethnicity. My Dad grew up in Virginia since my grandfather was in the army. My dad is Chinese Hawaiian American but identifies the most as Hawaiian. At the time being Asian meant facing a lot of discrimination. He chose not to "dance the dance" similar to the person who identified as gay and not engaging with the vietnamese community.
Question:
Is avoiding these parts of yourself (or not identifying with them) the same as running away from problems?
What is best for reaching equity among your community? Fighting against it, or going around it?
I also wonder how comedians who touch on racial issues hurt or help the community or people's perceptions of the community.
