Week 7
In this week's reading regarding Chau Huynh's art exhibit "Unfinished Story: A Tribute to My Mothers," I feel that Valverde did a great research through investigating the complexity of the political and sensitivity revolving topics that remotely hint communism. I can honestly say coming from a Vietnamese-American community, when the Vietnamese community feels attacked, we suddenly feel the need to point our fingers to calling the victim a communist. This happened in Madison's case of wanting to name a street Vietnam Town in San Jose instead of what the community wants "Little Saigon", and even Lee's Sandwhiches a popular Vietnamese sandwhiches franchise has been under scrutiny and labeled communist a couple times. I feel like this is the same with Chau Huynh's case. Her freedom of expression and art effected the Vietnamese Community who strongly oppose communism and anything that reflects poorly of the Vietnamese Community. Imagine if someone put the American Flag onto a toilet bowl or pedicure basin; I am sure the public would be very opposed to that. It reminds me about the controversy behind using the American Flag to sit on or taking using the American Flag to wrap your naked body for pictures. How important is our Flag and is there a certain line we cannot cross when using a flag?
