Pre-Screening Review 1A-Margirie Dublin

I really enjoyed how you guys started off with a conversation with each other and discussed how Asian Americans view medicine. Your objective for showing how Eastern Medicine is not inferior to Western medicine was clear. I even like how you guys incorporated and actual pharmacy scene to make it seem more legit. People often think that Eastern medicines is inferior to Western methods by your video exemplifies it pretty decently. I would suggest making the cuts for the scenes smoother, as long with he transitions. I even like the fact that someone in the video mentioned if someone has cancer, that there needs to be treatment and western medicine should be used. I think it is important to notice the different uses of each medicine based on the disease. I like how the interviews too exemplify the differences between western medicine uses and eastern medicines. Especially when it comes to short or long term. I would also suggest that doing more research from like other articles, and add that in with the professionals interview as well. I think overall your video was great, I like the set up, it made me drawn to see what medicine she would use. I think it is a video but informitive video.

I really enjoyed the premise of your topic. As a Filipina-American, I understand the historical and cultural racism towards the Japanese, and this is largely due to the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II.  It is interesting to see that deeply rooted taboo topic being put into a tangible context. In terms of feedback, I would incorporate more of the interviewees actual footage rather than the time lapses. While the clips have a great aesthetic to them, too much of one thing is not well taken for an audience trying to learn about a topic this important. I would also add evidence from books, articles, journals, etc. to support your claim rather than using just interviewers to prove it (although, I know this isn't the final draft and my group essentially did the same). In the beginning, I would change the color of the question as well to make it bolder and changing the font to something more aesthetically pleasing. Also, I'm not sure if the voices are supposed to sound sped up in the video, but if it's possible to slow it down, that'd be better! Unless the point is to keep the person anonymous, then I understand. My main concern regarding the video though is incorporating the interviewers faces in the video to make their testimony more personal. Also, please ask more people about this topic because a variety of answers is better than having a limited amount! The ending was also a bit abrupt, so a good way to end it would be to re-evaluate the main points/people's opinions of why the racism towards Japanese people are so prevalent in Filipinos and Chinese.

I think that your group did a really good job with the introduction. The introduction gives the highlight and information needed to understand the context and the basis of your video. Another thing that I think was done very well was the voice over. It provided statistics and information that helps orient your audience and organize the topic of your video. Your objectives were clear and were stated in the beginning, so it provides a great structure to the whole video. Also, the graphics in the video are great! On the other hand, something I think that your group can work on is putting subtitles during the interview parts. Sometimes the audio is lower than the rest of the video and subtitles will help with comprehension. Additionally, when each interviewee starts talking about another subject, the questions that appear on the screen are sometimes camouflaged with the background so I would say that changing the style of the font to something that has black borders would make it more visible. Overall, I think that your group has a very organized and clear video and you wouldn’t need to change things other than the subtitles and the fonts or style of your text.

Vince Olanda - 2E prescreening feedback

Vince Olanda 912845780 2E Review I thoroughly enjoyed all the efforts put into the cinematics portion of the video. The short clips of the time lapse throughout the video was truly beautiful. However, I personally believe that including so many time lapses within the video can actually be detrimental towards the video quality as a whole. There is an unspoken connection between the watcher and the video in which the watcher can interact more effectively and be more critical about it if the interview has a face to go along with it. The interviews were certainly useful, without doubt, but placing time lapse video over the interview over the faces of the interviewees can leave some room for detachment and possibly a lapse in interest for the watcher. Disregarding the small mistakes that can be improved upon, like I said before I'm very impressed with the several visuals that you included inside your video. Including all these several places of UC Davis in the video can really help the watcher become immersed in the environment, no matter where they happen to be watching it from. I definitely advocate for these time lapses; I by no means am saying to take them away. Instead, maybe sprinkle more interviews with the interviewee's face to go along with the words, so any given watcher can establish a connection with both the interviewee and the concept at hand, in turn causing them to be more concerned and possibly entice them to take action.

Review for Group2B:International Dav

Being an international student, I am so glad to see a video depicting international students' perspectives. This video clearly tells the intention of them pursuing higher education in the United States and allows the audience to know more about their thoughts and opinions. The biggest strength of this video is that it is very organized. The introduction, the interviews and the analysis are well-structured, making the development of the video approachable for the audience. In addition, the objective is straightforward and easy to understand.

However, since I am a design major student, I have some suggestions on how to make this video visually better. You guys may use some shapes beneath the text to make the words more visible or change the color of the fonts, because some of them are hard to read right now. Apart from that, you may also make the interview videos brighter so as to match the brightness of all clips. Additionally, it would be better if you guys can extend a little bit on the introduction part so as to tell your objective to the audience. Moreover, instead of targeting students who are pursuing higher education, you guys may also aim at transferring the stories of AIS to AA. This may be a good try to connect all Asian students.

As a Filipinx-Japanese American, I found your subject to be very compelling and important, as it truly is a subject that does not get enough attention. I think your strengths lie within the subject of your video, and I am interested to see how you will elaborate these ideas in the final SAPSA. Racism against Japanese people based on World War II is a prevalent issue in the Asian-American community generationally, and it's very important to illuminate these issues to help improve relations between Japanese people and Chinese and Filipinx people. If I were to recommend any changes, I would add some slides with text or slow down the speaking portion in the introduction because it is difficult to hear and understand. I think providing more context in the final project would also be useful for those that are not previously familiar with it. I would also recommend adding footage that pertains to the subject as well, but I'm not sure if you plan to do that for your final. I think adding footage from your interviews with different students might also benefit your SAPSA. Your objective was certainly clear from the video, and I'm really looking forward to hearing more insight on this topic!

Review for 3A

Although the written objective was short and concise, the video thoroughly covered the objective. I found the topic of your SAPSA very interesting, and watching this video helped me realize a lot of things about Filipino culture that I didn’t know about previously. I found parts of the video a bit repetitive, as almost all of the video was interviewing people sitting down and talking. In my opinion, there might have been too many interviews so adding in some variety in creativity like skits or maybe even a song about the your SAPSA would be ideas you can implement. I think there were many parts in the video where multiple people said similar things to a given question, so maybe take out those parts that are repetitive so you have more space to add in different things since the video is almost the maximum time length. However, I did enjoy the answers the people gave, and I liked how you had a lot of people participate. Another aspect that I liked was how you gave the explanation to why Filipinos love to entertain while showing clips of Filipinos performing. I liked the layout of the video because it was clear to understand - ordering from introducing the question, discussion on the topic, and answer/conclusion to the objective.

Hoang Phuong Vy Nguyen (Group 2B) Pre-Screening Review for Group 3B

There are strengths and weaknesses to this pre-screening. As for strengths: first of all, the chosen topic is very interesting. Personally, I have not seen many media coverage that discusses how Filipinos and Filipino Americans react to President Duterte's response to the drug problem in the Philippines. Therefore, I am eager and curious to learn more from this video. Second of all, I thought it was very clever of the group to interview both a student and a scholar who has knowledge in the area as this provides credibility to their video. Their editing overall was really good as well. I specifically enjoyed their introduction; it really set the mood for the rest of the video. The objective was a little difficult to grasp at first but as it is a work in progress, I strongly believe that the group is on the right track. As for weaknesses: the transition from the borrowed content to the first interview was a little abrupt. Perhaps, the group can ease the transition by adding transitional effects. This group can also cut back on time/ save time by: removing the credits at the end since this took up at least a full minute. Instead, this group can include the credits in the description box (a lot of Youtubers do this). They can also further synthesize the interviews and the borrowed content by removing the “um uh" so that they have at least 30-45 seconds left to conclude and re-state their intro/ objective. This way, in case the objective might have not been clear throughout the video, this will act as a safenet and help the audience understand the purpose of this video. Also, the first scene had too much writing and very little time for the audience to follow through. Perhaps, add more time, shorten the paragraph or do a voiceover would be better. Lastly, I thought interviews were clear and does not need subtitles but it is always better to have subtitles.

Victor Martinez Pre-Screening Review for group 3E

This video was actually very well done, and I was impressed by all the information you were able to provide within three minutes. I thought you did pretty well with the video, even if the images were still because it allows for the viewer to pay more attention to the information being provided. Now with all that being said, here are a few suggestions that I have. A little more information on the examples you provided might be helpful to add. For example, your group mentions how media coverage for protests isn’t there for Asian American protests, and instead focuses on other protests. I think if you could provide an example of a recent Asian American protest that didn’t get covered, then it could help illustrate your point some more. Also in addition to mentioning the protests that Asian Americans have participated in, maybe you could also talk about what their issues were and what the outcomes of these protests were. I thought that the volume was pretty good on this video, there isn’t a lot of interference, which is great. The only other thing I could suggest is perhaps adding some transition effects in between the images, so that it gives the video a little more motion to grab the viewer’s attention. Good work talking about this issue, because more people need to be aware of the influence that Asian Americans have in protests.

Don Elijah Atienza - Pre-Screening Review of 1B

Overall, I believe you have nearly all the element required to make your SAPSA do its purpose. I will start off with some weaknesses and suggestions. One thing I know you should have is definitely some narration by the creators, just like how we saw in Jim Lee's video. You should provide your analysis on the topic so that the audience can hear the voices and opinions of the creators and feel a connection to the video. This is a good opportunity to use any research you may have found; statistics are a good element to add to give your video credibility. You should also provide some new and profound information to the audience, because in my opinion I already had an idea of what your interviewees would say. I know that you had to use subtitles with non English speakers, however, for clarity I feel that it should be for the whole video. That way the audience does not miss anything and can absorb what you are trying to convey to us better. A technical issue is sound, particularly in one interview where it was in an open room - try and avoid that. What I really loved about your video is how you had an interview with a director. This adds to your video on so many levels. Also, the graphics you used were really cool and fresh - I feel like you can do more with it. I also think that your B-Roll footage has its own benefits. It can give emphasis on things being said as well as give a complimentary effect. I believe that your group did achieve your goal, but something you must add in order to make your SAPSA really good is add additional forms of credibility and provide more profound information. You still have time and I wish you the best of luck!!!! :)

Jocelyn Centeno 1A Prescreening Review

Your guys video was really good and gave a good example of a situation where western medicine clashed with a more traditional medicine. It was interesting to see that the person you interviewed still used these medicines and she trusted them for her illness. It goes to show that some people do not need to rely on western medicine. One thing I have to say is that maybe you guys should add in why using eastern medicine techniques is the same or even better than western medicine. Maybe do a voiceover of going in depth with the subject and just explaining a bit more about why eastern medicine is not a "witch doctor" practice. My group used our phones to record (and an actual microphone) ourselves and it worked out alright, so maybe it could work for you. And another suggestion may be to fix the volume of the interviewers and try to interviews indoors so that we could hear them clearer. And when you interview them it is better to have the camera facing towards them so it feels like they are talking to the audience. In the beginning I also noticed you guys did not have a title page or anything to introduce what the topic was about so maybe add in a title page. Also, background information about the subject would be really helpful so that people understand a little bit of where you are coming from.

It was a really good video I liked the fact you guys did a skit so that it is not so robotic and information is not being spewed out at you. I understood what you guys were talking about: Western medicine versus Eastern medicine. I do not really understand who your target audience is though and I would like to hear another side of someone who does not agree and why. But you guys did a really good job!

2C Pre-Screening: Institutionalized Sponsored Student Programs

Group 2C highlighted the effects of institutions sponsoring student programs through various interviews. I believe the group performed well in performing a non-biased argument/objective especially since the first thing to assume is the fact that people may automatically distrust the institution immediately. Based of off the immediate responses, I believe that the employees of such programs whether it may be the former or current, displayed a trust in the university and proved that the institutions are supporting the programs. One thing I believe should be changed is the fact that an intro and a conclusion should be placed in the video so that the audience can have a clearer understanding of what is going on. Moreover, an additional brief explanation of the student program would be helpful since what went on through my mind such as “What exactly is S.A.F.E.?” Another caveat I had when watching the video is the insertion of Leslie and her argument within the video. The two interviews before Leslie made the ideal clear that the institution was helpful to the student programs, despite the fact that there are some changes going on, but Leslie’s argument in which students do not want to go against administration made me ponder on the fact that perhaps the two interviewees felt comfortable and did not wish to go against the institution that so helps the student program thrive. Overall, these issues should be fixed just by being more explicit with an intro and a closing to introduce and summarize exactly what the group intends--besides that, the group performed swell.

Review For SAPSA Group 1F

This video starts off by mentioning how stable the government in the Philippines is. They do a good job in their video by discussing the importance of learning about their own culture and describe the weaknesses of our educational system as a whole. These weaknesses mainly include the fact that they mentioned in the video that classes in colleges do not include enough visuals such as videos that would describe the problems the minority cultures encounter in society, and that we only rely on the words people from these cultures say to see how they feel. Without seeing these people in person, it can be difficult for people of another culture to get the full meaning of the difficulties certain minority cultures face. This video also goes in to detail about the drawbacks of having one mainstream culture and mainly studying this culture, which ties in to the fact that we in America have a hard time knowing what happens globally if we just rely on our classes to teach us the information. I like how they had good visuals and fast motion pictures to describe their points they make in the video, but perhaps the pace of the visuals in the first part of the video should be slowed down because there were no visuals in the last minute of the video which made this part of the video hard to follow. I think their objective was clear in describing the type of cultures that were important for students to learn that cannot be learned just through class, and this objective was clearly met but the presentation of the video overall could be improved. I look forward to watching the full video in class on Week 10!

The video started off very interestingly. It’s good at catching the audience’s attention with the clips of different sports. It transitions well when you guys introduce the topic about Badminton and it’s depiction in the United States. You guys provide a lot of good exposition and background information that can be easily used later on in the video. You guys introduce another topic in the video very well also. Representation of Asians in media brings up a very good topic that ties in well with the lack of representation of badminton in American media as well. The lines read by two of the group members is a great addition to the video and give great insight onto the issue. This might not be changeable but the microphone quality of the second speaker could be a bit better. The introduction and information of badminton is great, but it could use a bit more information about Asian representation in both badminton and elsewhere in America. I'm not sure whether the goal is to explain the lack of representation of badminton in US media or if it's to explain why there are so many Asians in an Asian dominated sport. But that's probably explained more in your finished product. Looking forward to it.

Priscilla Lee Group 3E Pre-Screening Review

I like your topic. It is perceived that Asian Americans are not active or have no interest in social or political movements. I think your objective in creating awareness around the idea that Asian Americans are not as involved in social or political movements were clear. Some strengths presented in your video were the abundance of facts. It showed that you knew your topic and its history. Also the pictures along with the voice over were nice. For the narrative, it is nice and clean cut with a clear voice, an understandable voice. An area that can be improved is to have other voices speaking their thoughts on the issue. I think including an interview on other’s views would add a lot and will truly capture the audience. Another person’s opinion and views will show and prove the attention that this topic needs. Also while the pictures are nice and represent what you are talking about, I would like to see some movement or video showing this cause. Is there anything like this happening on the UC Davis campus? Have you been involved in any movements or protests? I would also like to hear about your own opinion and how you feel about it.
