2F Prescreening: Political Correctness

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGQjW7Jc9Bo

1. Group members: Linnea Patterson, Charlene Chan, Do Won Lee, Section A02
2. Objective: Although being “PC” was originally intended as a means to not offend particular groups of people, in recent years it has been labeled as a term that displays hypersensitivity and self-victimization. Our objective is to thoroughly examine political correctness as a whole and examining its possible benefits, as well as its consequences and downfalls. We want to promote “productive” growth in both side’s understanding of each other, and for them to understand why both sides came to be.
Target Audience: We would like to inform, rather than influence, the general public and those who might not be familiar with PC culture or who might not understand the controversy behind it. We would also like to influence both supporters and critics of PC culture.
3. Our video is a work in progress
4. Would it be more effective to use text (as it is now), or a voiced over narration?

  1. I thought that the overall video, especially the B-Rolls, was well done, which definitely made the video more aesthetically pleasing to watch. The idea/objective for the informational video is strong as well, as I like how you aimed to look at political correctness from an objective stance, and use the video as a way to inform rather than to influence a certain type of thinking.

I also thought that the examples for the "support" side were much weaker than what you provided for the opposition, which made the video seem more biased than you may have intended. While the opposition side had interviews and interview clips of people explaining their opposition to political correctness, the "support" side only had images and video footage of protests, which the audience may not necessarily equate to political correctness, or understand it as such. To strengthen that portion of the video, I think it would be good to put in an interview/clips of people explaining their support for political correctness, so the audience can better understand that side.

As for the text, I think it would be effective to utilize both text and voiceovers! I actually had trouble reading the text at some parts of the video because of the b-rolls, and I also had trouble staying engaged with the lengthy texts. I always find a video more engaging when there's both text and voiceover.

Overall, great job so far! I can't wait to see the finished video. -Alice Kuang

  2. Overall, I thought the video was very informative and straight to the point. As Alice said, the videography was very well done and it was nice how it was based on the UC Davis campus. Not many people know how much of a controversy can be in P.C., and this often leads to people passively accepting it. That being said, I appreciated your group's goal to simply lay down a foundation about the pros and cons of P.C. and allow viewers to reach their own conclusions about it.

The interviews and dialogue your group had for the opposing side of P.C. were strong; however, I wish the side in favor of P.C. were equally as strong. I would suggest using more interview footage in favor of P.C. as opposed to pictures and only a single interview.

Lastly, I agree with Alice in that the text was difficult to read. There was a spelling error of "controversy" in the video as well. I would suggest placing your text with a bit more intention and letting it stay on the screen a bit longer.

Other than those things, I felt your video did have a clear objective and the content was very informative. Great job though! -Camille Abutin

  3. Gabriel Cenizal:

I really enjoyed the flow of your SAPSA video. The definitions and background included really helps with competency of the subject. I also enjoy how you include key questions and examples to supplement understanding. Tying it back to UC Davis and including our collegiate status in this political climate is integral in tackling the idea of political correctness and how it impacts us. The background music is really nice and helps give the video a more natural vibe. I personally do not have any specific constructive criticism, but maybe including resources that will help others delve more deep into the political correct topic for competency, because the video is pretty surface level and could be applied more deeply to society.
