After
reading Jung-Sun Park's article, “Korean American Youth and
Transnational Flows of Popular Culture Across the Pacific,” I
learned that Korean Americans and other Asian Americans are central
to the spread and connectivity of world cultures. Korean Americans in
particular are an especially large part of this because of the
current widespread popularity of Korean pop culture, whose TV dramas,
pop music, and fashion styles have become influential in many parts
of Asia and the urban areas of America. Korean American international
students go back and forth between countries, so they can carry
foreign ideas to both places, spreading knowledge and cultures. The
article also mentions the benefits of South Korean pop culture, one
of which is the bonding time between family members of different
generations. I can vouch for that because I also watch Chinese TV
dramas with my parents, and that's one of the times when we can truly
bond, because they don't understand English very well and cannot
fully enjoy American entertainment.
Is
the spread of mainstream Asian pop culture beneficial to Asian
Americans, or does it create more misunderstandings and stereotypes
about Asians as a whole?
