Week 8
“I
am a man with a Heart” by Andrew Thi, illustrates a contradiction of how Asian
Americans are viewed by society. Thi states how at school he works very hard
and gets good grades while outside of school he is a criminal. He steals things
for money with his friends. However, stealing became a bad habit that turned
his life in prison due to his frequent acts and snitching by his friends when
they got caught. Asian Americans are seen as the model minority, whom get
grades and get a good job, by the eyes of the Americans. Thi’s parents believed
in coming to America to give their children a good education, which is why Thi
was very successful in his education However, Thi began stealing stuff because
he wanted to be like those Americans he see at school with their name brand
materials. The consequences of his actions lead him to prison. I view his “bad”
side as the consequence of trying to become American because Americans did not
want Asian Americans in their country and they will try to find any way to
deport them back to their country. Similarly, there was a law passed to deport Asian
criminals for their poor behavior. But their behavior is
caused by American society not giving Asian Americans a chance to be part of
the society. Thi’s story gives a good idea how Asian Americans are perceived in
the American society.
Question: Why does the government think that deporting an Asian immigrant, whom has done criminal activity, is the best way to get rid of them?
Two viewpoint of Asians
