A Day in the Life

As a human being it is important to try to understand different cultures, but I think it is more important to start with an individual’s experiences because then will one be able to connect and develop a story for that culture. I don’t personally have experience or know anyone with experience in prison so I really enjoyed reading Mike Ngo’s article because it helped be realize how real prison is and how worldly the conflicts attached are. Tales of prison are shared in the media, but reading it from a first person’s point of view was different. It felt as though I was there with him.

The Asian population among those incarcerated in America may be fractional but the struggles that they face are so big. For instance, Ngo wondered if his father felt responsible for his imprisonment because of his father’s decision to immigrate to the States. This doubt he carries could have only come from immigrant families. What if Ngo could have had a better life in Vietnam? More generally, how do we cope with the decisions we make in our lives if the results aren’t as we hoped?
