Emergence of Queer Vietnamese America

Cristina Musngi
Section 1
Week 10

The article "Emergence of Queer Vietnamese America" by Gina Masequesmay talks about how queer Vietnamese Americans grew up differently because of their detachment from the patriarchal, heteronormative way that society wanted. Because of not conforming to gender stereotypes, queer Vietnamese Americans generally felt isolated, lost or confused. This lead to the formation of Ô-Môi, a social network of support for lesbian, bisexual and transgender females.

The picture below reflects how many queer female Vietnamese Americans are strong independent women who do not follow the patriarchal mindset. Queer Vietnamese females do not worry about detrimental issues such as having a higher degree could mean fewer marriage prospects. It is because of this strength that I really admire organizations such as Gay Vietnamese Alliance and Ô-Môi for empowering many people who would have otherwise felt lost.

Question: What specific issues do Queer Vietnamese have to face and talk about in Ô-Môi group meetings?
