Where do we keep the unwanted?

Drucella Anne Miranda
Section 01
Week 8

Although the US allows refugees into the nation, the process is very tedious and not everyone will obtain entry. In the article Day in the Life by Mike Ngo, we know that there is a large sense of guilt because he acknowledges how fortunate he is that his family was able to leave Vietnam, although he still somehow took it for granted and is now imprisoned in the US.

There is a particular quote that interested me, which is:
"Is society praying for the individual who has failed miserably, or is it the other way around?"
This brings many thoughts to mind because how often do we blame 'bad' people for 'being who they are' when it is much more complicated than that. The US has played a large role in causing war and economic ruin across the globe as well as creating racist stereotypes that cause a lot of discrimination while policing.

How come we as a society do not take accountability for the people we consider criminals, when they are fostered within our society, therefore implying we are passive in things leading up to their behavior? How does our prison industrial complex help people?
