Honor Roll Criminal Andrew Thi

Amy Hoang
Section 1
Week 8

Reading Andrew Thi's article, “I am a man with a heart,” I learned a lot about the author, who is a Cambodian American immigrant. Despite growing up in a hostile environment and becoming engaged in various criminal activities, Thi was a smart student who received only A's and B's and stayed on the honor roll throughout school. That surprised me, because I would never have thought a criminal would be smart in school as well. After being snitched on by others who were stealing, he was placed into juvenile and, at some point, punished by federal law. His case made me wonder, how could he have become involved in such crimes when he was raised by a good family? He seems to me to have an addiction to crimes, because right after leaving prison, he starts stealing again. What kind of environment and people did he come in contact with who roped him into his crimes? In another situation, could he have been a successful member of society?

Below is a picture of an Asian American gang. Most such gangs' members include Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian ethnicities.
