Globalization and Its Effect on Asian American Youth
The article “Korean American Youth and Transnational Flows
of Popular Culture Across the Pacific” by Jung-Sun Park describes the process
of globalization and its effect on Asian American youth, particularly Korean Americans.
Park categorizes them into three groups: those born in the U.S, those who immigrated
to the U.S at an early age, and students who study abroad. The students
studying abroad have a huge influence on the Asian popular culture consumed in America.
They have a connection to their home and continue to consume and share various forms
of media. I personally do not connect with this article very much, as I did not
watch television shows aired in Asia or listen to music from Korea or China.
But I did recognize and see a lot of the two cultures mixed together growing up
from my friends. How often do the other non-American cultures mix together? For
example, how often do you see Latino culture mixed with Korean culture?
EXO, a popular K-Pop boy band, an example of Korean culture becoming popular in America. |
