Globalization and Its Effect on Asian American Youth

Globalization and Its Effect on Asian American Youth

The article “Korean American Youth and Transnational Flows of Popular Culture Across the Pacific” by Jung-Sun Park describes the process of globalization and its effect on Asian American youth, particularly Korean Americans. Park categorizes them into three groups: those born in the U.S, those who immigrated to the U.S at an early age, and students who study abroad. The students studying abroad have a huge influence on the Asian popular culture consumed in America. They have a connection to their home and continue to consume and share various forms of media. I personally do not connect with this article very much, as I did not watch television shows aired in Asia or listen to music from Korea or China. But I did recognize and see a lot of the two cultures mixed together growing up from my friends. How often do the other non-American cultures mix together? For example, how often do you see Latino culture mixed with Korean culture?
EXO, a popular K-Pop boy band, an example of Korean culture becoming popular in America.
