Section 001
Week 8
In the
article “Intimate Partner Violence among Asian Immigrant Communities”,
Yeon-Shim Lee and Linad Hadeed discussed the statistics and characteristics of
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) of women. Lee and Hadeed also researched on the
topic of IPV among Asian immigrants. Their findings of on IPV among Asian
immigrants were quite limited but some statistics were developed.
I do
take the topic of (domestic) violence seriously, but I found characteristics of
this article somewhat humorous. After every other point or produced statistic,
the author would state that the findings were limited because of a number of
reasons. It almost seemed as if the author was apologizing constantly
throughout the article for not having sound findings.
Moreover,
as I read this article, I received an impression that America is trying to some
sort of secret power of Asian immigrant women. For instance, in the article,
the author would present statistics of IPV for the “general population”. A few
sentences later, the author would then show how Asian immigrant women are
different with another set of statistics; I believe the later would produce
more appealing statistics. Their search for the Asian immigrant superpower is hindered
because Asian immigrant women are skilled in hiding. From the article, the researchers
seem to never be able to get a large enough sample size of Asian women to
survey.
I do
apologize for making light of a serious topic. I do not approve of the idea of
domestic violence. I would agree with this article’s suggestion for further
education and investigation in IPV in the Asian immigrant community if this
would result in less violence and suffering. Additionally, personally, I find Asian
women to be strong in many aspects. From this article, I also believe there
maybe something that can be learned from the Asia women population.
