Korean Americans and the Model Minority

Week 7
Qimin Li
Section 2

Much like Korean immigrants who have successfully integrated parts of their culture within the western hemisphere, other successful Asian American minorities have made their mark in America. In the article, Jung-Sun Park mentions how major cities have included ethnic Korean TV channels and newspapers transmitted from Korea. This situation is similar to the model minority such as Chinese Americans. There are newspapers available in Asian markets about the current events in China. Also, we were able to have Chinese TV channels available to us via dish network. This was something that was not possible ten years ago, but because Asian Americans have made such important milestones in America, we’ve had more resources related to our culture available to us. However, like we talked in lecture and discussion, minorities not part of the “model minority” are left behind. For instance, we do not see as much Hmong or Cambodian markets available (at least, not where I am from). Some of these ethnicities are even obscure from different regions of America. For instance, there are a lot of students from Davis who do not know what “Hmong” is. There’s this misunderstanding that they originate from Mongolia.

My question is, how can we make resources available to model minorities in their own language available to other minorities who do not receive this kind of benefit?
