Art: Open for Interpretation

Creating Identity, Defining Culture, and Making History from an Art Exhibit: ‘Unfinished Story: A Tribute to My Mothers’

This is a very fascinating tale by Huynh Chau about a controversy she unexpectedly sparked. I find the protests of her art’s publication to be very confusing. “We want to show the Nguoi Viet Daily is pro-communist” but “we don’t want to ruin the newspaper”, among other things made the protest very hard to back.

What made that image so important to them to have to protest? Sure, you could argue that it was pro-communism, but to go as far as protest the publisher seems to be going too far. I digress, this is the double-edged sword of free speech.

This article also opened my eyes to the history behind the aftermath and impact of the Vietnam war. I chose the picture that displayed the basins better and in full color so I could get a better look at what was going on. Now I can kind of see where the protest comes from, but they do need to be open to some sort of interpretation of different meanings.
