Cultural Impact on Society

Section 1
Week 7

“Annyeonghaseyo!!!” That’s ‘hello’ in Korean. I’m not Korean, but I am Chinese. So how do I know that word?  On my free time, I watch a bunch of Korean shows and I listen to K-Pop.  I enjoy learning about the culture and eating Korean food. One of my main goals is to travel to Korea after I graduate because I love the culture. Jung-Sun Park’s “Korean American Youth and Transnational Flows of Popular Culture across the Pacific” discusses about how Koreans are struggling to adapt to the American culture because they feel a sense of losing their identity while trying to adapt to the American culture. Therefore, they stay within their community and keeping their culture alive while in America. Thus, as they keep their culture alive, it spreads to other communities and everyone can share knowledge of their culture. Everyone should feel equal and not feel segregated as Park indicated with the Korean youth. Learning about another culture brings people together and a sense of understanding of one another.

We may have not noticed, but the Korean culture has been integrated into our lives. The popular clothing store, Forever 21, is owned by a Korean. They aimed to bring trending Korean styles to America. It is the same with America. Music has a big influence on Korean pop music, especially rap or R&B. Everyone should come to understand that every culture has influenced how we are living today and we should accept one another.

Question:  Why can’t we accept others and stop the segregation?
