Andrew Thi’s article, “I am a man
with a heart,” was very similar to the “Sentenced Home” video that was shown in
class. In the article Andrew describes his life as a Cambodian immigrant who
got himself in a lot of trouble and found himself in a position to be deported
after a law passed in 1996 that subjected ex-cons immigrants like Andrew to be
deported immediately. While the article mainly focused on the deportation of
immigrant criminals, I found the section about Andrew’s academic success more
interesting. The stark difference between Andrew’s criminal background and
honor roll student image made me think about what kind of effect this has on
the model minority myth. Although Andrew is breaking all kinds of Asian
American stereotypes with getting in trouble with the law and committing crimes
he is still fits the mold by excelling in the classroom. In the article it
talked about “build[ing] a positive image” to avoid deportation which made me
wonder if academic success is accounted for in the deportation process. While
Andrew may have been a thug and a troublemaker, he still has a very bright mind
that has potential to provide positive contribution for the country.
Q.) What affect do Asian American criminals have on the
model minority stereotype?
