The article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” by Amy Chua points out the difference between the stereotypical Western mothers and Chinese mothers. The difference seems to be huge where the Western mothers seem to care more about their children’s “individuality” by encouraging them to pursue their passions and supporting their choices. I have noticed this in a lot of Californian households. Where most kids are told to “do their best” when in reality they are not pushed to do their best. Sometimes giving them the confidence and enforcing them to do in school is better then getting them do “their best” because most kids now days get lazy and don't take anything serious. I noticed that the article talked specifically about Chinese mothers but when it mentioned Western it was not specific about which race it was referring to. I found that Western style parenting can’t be dumbed down to one type. Just like how not all Chinese mothers are like Chua, not all Western parents are like the image she portrays to the reader. When I finished reading the article I realized that I really enjoyed the quote “everyone is special in their special own way” because it is true some Chinese mothers are considered tiger mom’s because of the way they push their children to be the best but it is due to those “crazy mothers” that there is smart and outstanding students who don't settle for average.
To whom does Amy Chua refer to when she talks about Western parenting? What is Chua's proof for her claims?
