Reading Professor Valverde’s article in the San Jose Mercury
News was a bit refreshing and nostalgic. I briefly mentioned this incident
concerning Madison Nguyen and how my parents reacted to her decision to name “Little
Saigon” the “Saigon Business District”. Those who were anti-communist protested
and were labeling Nguyen as a communist. Valverde explains that in her article
how this situation is not really about communism or love for the motherland and
I wholeheartedly agree. Madison Nguyen
was trying to appeal to the Vietnamese American community as a whole. There is
no communism, most of the newer generations now do not have the same love for
their homeland as refugees and migrants, so how is her decision to not name the
district “Little Saigon” related to any of these. Many focus to see how divided
the Vietnamese community is, and although I admit that there are differences,
we all get along. There just has not been a voice that has been able to
represent every single individual. It’s
an ongoing battle for representation and the want for their opinions to be
heard. Why must it be a question about communism or anti-communism?
