Suppression versus Freedom of Speech & Press

When a conflict or protest happens, authorities would try to contain the issue and tension in one area before it reaches the public. Hamamoto’s “The Dream Is Over: Lenono and The Death of The Asian American Movement” reminded me of the UC Davis Pepper Spray Incident in which authorities used violence against targets in an attempt to silent them. Without the targets and other witnesses, authorities are then able to create false claims and stories based on their own perspective and benefits. Stories that are told by the authorities may further deceive the public into believing what they said was the truth. The public’s lack of questioning authorities and concerns would then indirectly and mistakenly justify the authorities’ actions and behaviors that are problems of the society today.

Although the U.S. claims that there are always the “freedom of speech and press” from the First Amendment, the government is also trying to suppress activists who are fighting for their cause at the same time. What can we do to protect activists from harm and danger?
