The topic brought up in the article, "Does Tiger Parenting Exist", touches on the parenting style that is associated with Chinese parents. This style is said to promote excellence in academics and an importance in family values.
Growing up in a mostly white and Asian American community, there were many stereotypes that were presented by members of the white portion of the community when it came to parenting. Although many people were friends with Chinese kids in particular, some speculated on the harshness of the parents when it came to academics in particular. Since there were a few outlying families with strict or harsh parents concerning the academic achievements of their children, kids from the white part of the community often grouped all Chinese families into this stereotypical parenting style. Often ridiculous rumors would arise, such as: "Chinese kids were not allowed to eat or drink water until their homework was completed".
This common misconception still is prevalent today. As shown by the statistics in the opening paragraph of the article, the majority of Chinese parents do not adhere to this "tiger" style of parenting. Yet, the common belief amongst people outside of the Chinese American community believe this harsh parenting style is the most common among these families.
Were stereotypical rumors like the one stated in the blog commonplace in your community?
