I resonated with Boyung Lee’s article. The Confucian values and notion are influential to people’s ways of thinking. His thoughts affect many aspects of Asians and Asian immigrants’ daily life and social outlook in the United States. However, for the first generation of the U.S., they feel ambivalent about the ways their parents raised them and the concepts from the society and their peers. They have to find a balance in this conflict. One of my friend is a first generation Asian American and she is a Lesbian. Her friends, including me, do not have bias on her. However, her parents remain some conservative thoughts though they have immigrated to the U.S. for over 20 years. They cannot accept homosexuality, let alone their own daughter. Because of the cultural conflict, my friend have to keep it secret from her parents. She has no other choice but lie to her parents. Her parents’ thoughts, as an example of immigrants, cannot be changed easily. For the first generation Asian American, how do they find a balance between two ways of value?
