If we compare the rape culture of today in the United States to the past Asian American ideas about sexuality, it's surprising to think how each differs in their values. As I was reading this article, I couldn't help but compare the reactions towards a woman's sexuality; it was very eye-opening. It made me realize how scared I would have been if I was a daughter in a Chinese or Korean family years ago. I know that people today have rallied with those who were raped by someone, defending themselves and others who have similar experiences. In our culture today, we focus on blaming the rapist. In contrast, Asian families would feel ashamed or humiliated that someone in their family was raped. The most surprising fact was that some families would even kill their own daughter or let their daughters kill themselves.
I believe that Asian parenting, such as tiger moms and strict rules with limited leniency, shapes a child and his/her growth to a certain degree. However, the views of Asian woman in media completely contrasts their initial perceptions in Asian families. How did these two cultures mingle if their views were on opposite sides of a spectrum? How did the perception of Asian woman in western civilization change drastically from a pure-virgin to an over-sexualized, obedient woman?

A MAX shoes advertisement

I fail to understand why there is an Asian women tied up to a shoe. Obviously, she is in a sexual pose, and she doesn't look like she's putting in any resistance. What exactly is this advertisement trying to sell?
