In the article “Doing the Mixed Race Dance” by Professor Valverde, I was surprised to see how people who are mixed-race Vietnamese have to “do a dance” to be included into the Vietnamese American society. Before this reading I knew that the Vietnamese American community was very diverse but I was unaware of how exclusive the Vietnamese American community was in deciding who is and is not a part of their community. I thought it was really strange in how they were more inclusive towards people they believed that were not products of the war because the Vietnamese War is so important to their culture/identity. I feel that it is really unfair and tiring in that mixed-race Vietnamese have to be aware of how they act or the questions they answer around Vietnamese Americans to make sure they can still be apart of the community. I agree with professor Valverde that the Vietnamese American community objectifying people from their race is a problem that more people should keep be aware of.
Question: What ways can we have the Vietnamese American community be more accepting of those who are mixed-race?
