I really like the article "Thi Man With Heart" by Andrew Thi. I can relate his story to part of my life. He talked about how he was always on the honor roll and got good grades. This reflect the model minority myth where the elite Asian American immigrate over to U.S with outstanding academic performance. Parents have high expectation from their kids. They expect their children to perform well in school. At the same time, focusing on academic really puts the stress on the kids. They lose their sight of focus on fun and excitement, which can lead them on to the wrong path. Having a trans-identity really will have a huge impact on the children. Parents need to guide them toward the right direction. Try to help their children fit into the mainstream society, but at the same time holding on to their original identity. It is a difficult task to balance both identity without losing one.
