"Intimate Partner Violence Among Asian Immigrant Communities" by Yeon-Shim Lee and Linda Hadeed
Although the article was very informative and it covered the areas it promised to cover in the abstract, I wish that there was more research on the implications of intimate partner violence (IPV) for second- or third- generation couples. This article presented a lot of research that linked notions of male superiority and privilege in traditional values as a strong factor for IPV. However, how will IPV shift and change as new generations do not adopt/modify these traditional values? What about IPV that is inflicted towards men?
It was mentioned that as children witness abuse inflicted against them or against the other parent, they are more likely to be the aggressors/victims of IPV. I would really like to see this idea applied to younger generations.
The only point that the article made where I learned something new, was the connection made between IPV and sexual risk factors. Sex and STDs are definitely considered private matters and it is uncouth to talk about those subjects, but the truth of the matter that confining that conversation to privacy jeopardizes sexual and physical health. One point of suggestion I would like to make, or rather perhaps a question I want to pose, is if women and children shelters advertise themselves by tapping into transnational cultural networks such as Chinese newspapers or Vietnamese television channels?
