Week 8
I found the regarding Norman Yoshio Mineta to be of particular interest, specifically the section about reverse discrimination and how because Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice were minorities, they were given increased freedom and limited oversight out of fear of racism. This idea relates to Affirmative Action where society deems it necessary and prudent to give minorities a helping hand. However, when left unchecked, minorities in positions of power may abuse their power as is often the case. In addition, I found the concept of ethnic covering to be more of an issue with the actors themselves rather than the directors. The fact that ethnic minorities are willing to be used by the white majority to appeal to certain demographics and expound specific issues that ultimately benefit the majority speaks to their desperation. This hegemonic standpoint speaks to the sheer difficulty of making it to positions of power as ethnic minorities to the point where individuals are willing to essentially sell their soul for simply a facade of power. How are regular Americans supposed to empower themselves against so called ethnic covering and actors who very well may be Oscar worthy?
