In his article, "...in the Life," Mike tells his story about facing imprisonment because of gang-related activities. His writing is impeccable, and it reminds me of how you can never really judge a person's intelligence simply based on their actions. Humans are three-dimensional beings, with so much to offer to this world. His words hit me because I felt his pain and anguish, as he lived in a cell and yet had to work for the people who oppressed him. Hearing of how the guards made fun of the inmates when they had to get naked made me upset. These people were anything but empathetic; they were disrespectful and treated the inmates as if they were slaves. One of the lines that stuck out to me was, "Is society praying for the individual who has failed so miserably, or is the other way around?" It spoke to how corrupt and wrong the system is behind closed doors. Sometimes, I feel like it's unfortunate that we forget that these prisoners are humans as well. They feel all the emotions that we feel, and they're not all cold-hearted.
Question: What are steps we can all take to be more empathetic towards others?
