Why I love my strict Chinese Mom
This
article appealed to me because I grew up in an Asian household and even though
my parents were strict sometimes, they definitely gave me a lot of freedom
growing up. So if I were to put myself in Sophia’s shoes, I don’t think I would
be so thrilled about having a mother who is so strict because I really
appreciated being able to made a lot of my own decisions, even if they are
wrong.
I understand
how publishing an article such as “Why Chinese Mothers are Superior” would
receive a lot of criticism and negative comments as the title even somewhat
attacks mothers of different ethnicities. Raising a child is definitely a
touchy subject that I don’t think anyone has all the correct answers on how to
do it. There’s more than one right way to do things and you can’t really say
which is better or worse. I see where the mindset of a tiger mom comes from and
also why some would be opposed to it. But it doesn’t matter because it seems
like Sophia is extremely happy of the way she was raised and loves her mother
for what she has done.
Question: It seems like many of the ‘tiger moms’ you hear of
are those mothers that have immigrated to the U.S. because they are the ones
that had to face the struggles of immigrating to a foreign country and many do
immigrate for the purpose of giving their children better opportunities in
life. So do ‘tiger mom’ characteristics get passed down from generation to
generation or are they just most found in immigrant/early generations of Asian
American mothers.
