As I read this article, I couldn't help but relate it to my group's Social Awareness Campaign. Our objective is to raise the number of Asian Americans in politics or interested in politics through a panel of speakers or informational workshops, yet the idea of the government implementing a person from the minority in a highly visible role to lessen public fear seems to contradict our initial goal. It is not enough to show a racially diverse group of senators if the minority among them is only for a "scripted public relations scenario intended to calm public fear over racial profiling." It may be a great idea to display a post-racial multicultural fascism, but if a minority isn't holding a position to articulate his/her concerns or opinions, then our objective is irrelevant. The reason why Asian Americans are involved with the government should not be to supply intelligence information to the FBI or ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence). If that were to happen, Asian American residents will begin to distrust the official who they originally thought was on their side.
Our goal with the Social Awareness Campaign is to ignite the spark in someone's mind towards politics. My main concern is whether or not they will be able to hold a position high enough to make a difference. Will history repeat itself again?
