ASA 2 - Section 3

In Andrew Thi's article, "I am a man with a heart", he speaks of his experiences growing up. From his birth in Cambodia, to growing up in Oakland, he faced many challenges that I believe stem around his transnational identity. I feel like after his car accident, where he lost the ability to speak and read Cambodian, in a way, he also lost his strong tie to his Cambodian culture. Then, as he grew older and was surrounded with different races in middle and high school, he participated in many illegal and dangerous activities. I think he may have done so to fit in with the popular culture at his school, and to be "one of them". It may be because he felt like he had no identity to associate himself with, so he felt he had to act like others did to fit in and be "american". If Andrew never got into his accident, would he associate with himself being more Cambodian and maybe have not gotten himself into so much trouble?
