A Man with a Heart

In I Am a Man with a Heart by Andrew Thi, I was interested in the different perceptions that Andrew held throughout his life and as he was growing up. He went from being a troublesome and ill-behaved kid stealing cars and committing crimes to appreciating his life and those surrounded by him once he realized he could be deported back to Cambodia. I think Andrew’s narrative are just one of the many examples of lives affected by the deportation laws that were aimed at immigrants. It’s unfair that one is judged for crimes they committed many years ago when at that time they probably didn’t know what was best for them or when they were still young at that time and didn’t know any better. The U.S. has had a long history with implementing these kind of laws and policies against People of Color in an effort to get them to leave the country. It’s tragic that these things exist in the first place but that’s when unity and collaboration between People of Color to do something about these laws is the most important in order for change to be made.

Question: Why do these laws and policies exist in the first place? What is the purpose and reasoning behind them? Is there anything that can be done to prevent more from being implemented?
