In “I am a man with a
heart,” Andrew Thi shares some experiences that are relatable to many Southeast
Asian Americans. A majority of Southeast Asian immigrants come from poor backgrounds
with no education, so many of the parents focus on working to provide for their
families and emphasize the importance of education to their children. The
children of these immigrants usually have no guidance in education and have to
work just as hard as any other students. These experiences show that the Model Minority
Myth doesn’t acknowledge the different Asian American ethnicities and their own
struggles. Furthermore, it is important to understand the cases of each
individual in order to respond or resolve it appropriately, especially in
serious circumstances like Thi and his deportation case. Not all situations are "black and white."
Are there effective and
efficient methods that help with better understanding deportation cases so that
misdemeanors are more easily pardoned?
