Blog 7 Chau Huynh

I found Professor Valverde's article on Chau Huynh interesting, particularly the section where she describes her mother and father. Huynh's story of seeing her father disappear forever with their electric fan was so specific that I immediately visualized it. Moreover, the symbol of the electric fan as their "only possession of value" puts their economic status and Vietnam's economic situation into context. Huynh's story regarded her father was particularly resonant for me because I too lost my father at a young age. The idea of "trying to love my father again" was both brave and beautiful to me. Huynh's impetus for creating the quilt for her mother and how it symbolized all the tears that she shed was also heartbreaking because I could almost feel her pain through the words that she spoke. This article and Huynh in particular highlighted the idea that art can heal and provide a measure of support against emotional trauma. For someone like me who is not particularly talented in art, how does one achieve the same measure of support through art without actually having to create a masterpiece?
