DeBoer fears that universities are losing sight of their main purpose as an educational institution, and that they are being taken over by corporatism. This reminds me of the college applications process. High school students pay thousands of dollars to advisors to direct and assist them with all their academic and extracurricular activities. As I read his article, I begin to realize that the corporate application process I witnessed two years ago only foreshadows the even bigger business American Universities have evolved into. I was glad to see the author call attention to and addressed the unhealthy sensitivity to perceived offense on college campuses. I had noticed that the information being taught in classes are very one-sided, and lack a variation of viewpoints. Ideas in the classrooms should come from divergent sources, for good ideas prosper when there is healthy debate and challenges. DeBoer says that colleges are only motivated by the desire to please their alumni and boards, which makes me wonder: How different would the “college experience” be if students were their sole motivation?
