While reading "Monster, Terrorits, Fag" by Puar and Rai, I constantly came back to the idea of orientalism and how the Westerners' skewed views on the East still remain and are even further intensified by the 9/11 attacks. Brown people are generalized into one group which is constantly stereotyped as being mystical, oppressive, monstrous, and savage. One thing that stuck out to me was how Americans sought to sodomize Bin Laden and "turn him into a fag" as punishment. These notions of heteronormativity demonstrate how the America's orientalism has brought hegemony over the its people, even some of the LGBQT community, to make them believe that such phrases are acceptable. I also found it interesting how American feminists demonstrated orientalism by deeming Afghan women in need of rescue from their male oppressors. Such thinking shows us how the 9/11 attacks resulted in Americans quickly resorting to racist and sexist attitudes.

Question: Have these oppressive views and opinions lessened or persevered to the modern day?
