The USA Patriot Act

To my understanding, the Patriot Act was enacted to ensure security among American citizens after the sudden terrorist attack of 9/11. But does it really help citizens and make them feel safer? Although it enables the power to intercept communication means so that the government is aware and prepared in any case of terrorist attacks, many individuals feel as if it is a violation. How do we know that the government isn’t abusing their powers and taken advantage of us? In my opinion, even though this act is bittersweet, the overall incentive of this act is beneficial. We have to make sacrifices and give up some privacy, but I believe that this is better for the population as whole. For example, if the government has to look through one person’s e-mails to ensure that the population in the area is safe, I don’t think it’s a bad thing because it is only one person against many; there is strength in numbers. In this case, I believe ends justify means. But then again, it was only fairly recently that this act was enabled and our country survived well without it, which is why many people protest against it.

How would our world be different today if 9/11 had never even happened?
