There is a saying in China, a person who has
been bitten by a serpent is afraid of a rope. Such old saying assists me to
understand the article “Monster, Terrorist, Fag: The War on Terrorism and the
Production of Docile Patriots”. In this article, Jasbir K. Puar and Amit S.Rai place
a concern about the stereotype and fear formed, long since the 9.11 Attack, by
American public to the “abnormals”, especially to the Middle East people. Similar
situations happened during and after World War II in the U.S. when the innocent
Japanese Americans were suppressed severely merely because of their Japanese
background. I agree that we should fight against the Nazi and the terrorists,
who ignore the human rights, contaminate human thoughts, and threaten the whole
society. However, patriots should be more rational. Puar and Rai in this
article mention that some media reported bias selections of news: some focus on
negative news like “public stoning in Afghanistan” to the homosexual women, or
on some struggles for the freedom and human rights in the Middle East. To me,
such scenes are familiar because some Asian media frequently report how
dangerous Japan is, how Japanese people live a hard life, and how many Japanese
psychopaths exist. However, most of the Japanese at present have nothing to do
with the Nazis dozens of years ago. Unfortunately, many people are misled. It
also happens in some Asian countries that the Japanese shops were robbed and destroyed
by groups of docile patriots, justifying their ridiculous action by a term “punishment
to the evil”.
Question: How can we reduce the production of
docile patriots and call for rational patriots?
