The article breaks down many of the reasons why Patriot II would be imposing on our civil liberties as U.S. American citizens. It is absolutely ridiculous to read this and think that some people actually want this act to take into effect. Wiretaps would be allowed without warrants, and the government would be able to access our private records with ease. By going on the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) website and learning more about the Patriot Act II, one quote from the New York Times Magazine from February 23, 2003, shocked me the most: “An American citizen suspected of being part of a terrorist conspiracy could be held by investigators without anyone being notified. He could simply disappear.” The purpose of the act is to ensure safety. Reading this memorandum made me think of what my English teacher said years ago: "It's crazy how much we're willing to sacrifice our right to privacy for protection." I agree with the ACLU website that the act is flawed because it would do away with the system of checks and balances, which is meant to oversee the government's actions in order to maintain the rights of citizens.
Question: How could destroying the system of checks and balances be good for citizens of this country?
