Blog 5 | Gruesome Violence

ASA 2 - Section 3

After reading Hamamoto's writing about the violent society within the United States now and in the past due to the Vietnam War and the influences it had on soldiers and those acquainted, I feel disgusted by the acts of violence that some have committed to the completely innocent. I do not think it is justifiable in any way that the mass murders that occurred in Vietnam can be comparable or "the same" as the murdering or raping of many yellow women and men here in the United States. However, I do see the connection between living a very violent and militaristic lifestyle and then trying to adjust to a more peaceful life and encountering troubles- but that still does not give any excuse to harm those that are unarmed and not dangerous. The government enforces how militaristic our country is, so I agree with the statement by Brandeis in the last section stating that "our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher," and thus the government should take responsibility for those that are acting out in violence in direct correlation to war memories or the sharing of war memories. So how come the government has not done anything to restrict those that come back from war from guns or put them through some series of psychological tests to make sure they can live peacefully with others?
