The article, “The USA PATRIOT Act: a sketch”, briefly
describes how Congress responses to the terrorists’ attacks of September 11, 2001. Its title USA PATRIOT
stands for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate
Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001". As the
title suggests, the Congress want to strength security controls by passing
legislation. Granted terrorism is horrible, is it effective to prevent
terrorism by giving more powers to government to track and intercept
information? It is always a controversial issue. Personally, I think this act may performed like a double-edged sword. It may does help the government
get more information about terrorist organizations and then protect United
States. But this act also restricts people’s freedom. The privacy of U.S
citizens seems being invaded in some ways. Shouldn’t the government also
protect their citizen’s rights at the same time? Because I know the United
States is a country which respects human rights. Therefore, my question arises:
is there any changes on this act could make this act works better with
considering more about human rights?
