Blog 6: Section A01: Pahnia Vang

In this week’s readings about the article Monster, Terrorist, Fag, the focus centralizes much around ideologies such as War on Terrorism, production of the docile patriot, heteronormativity, the good citizenship, and sexuality. What I found interesting following the attacks of September 11 was that terrorist was reinvented to represent what a monster is such that these monsters needed to be hunted down to keep peace within the United States. This indicates the use of sensationalism to grab the public's attention that indeed terrorists are monsters and that they are everywhere so let's criminalize every brown people. Through this, racial profiling begins to shift from blacks to brown people and thus was harassed and racially criminalized as a monster. What this signifies on the broader scale was that the vast diversity and ethnicities of brown people did not eliminate them from this selection pool. Many were targeted despite themselves affirming that they were not affiliated with Osama Bin Laden.  Through this article, I agree that the war on terrorism has deployed many of the targeted groups to act accordingly to the docile patriot, following the heteronormativity of American ideals, and of the good citizen. This can indicate a strategic way to utilize power in a way that conform and submit those in non-power position to yield and be submissive. What this can also suggest was that there are no needs to have people of color within the United States if they cannot become true citizens of America.

Question: What is the meaning of being a true citizen of America if race is always a deciding factor that determines what you are?
