In the
reading by Jasbir Puar and Amit Rai, the following analogy was discussed: “Islamic
extremists are to Islam as ____ is to Christianity.” The reading suggests the KKK as one answer to
that analogy. After 9/11, anyone who was
Muslim or resembled Middle Easterns were discriminated as terrorists. However, when President Obama compared Islamic
extremists to Christian extremists, Americans were quick to defend the actions
of Christians. In the early 1900s, both supporters
and opponents of slavery used Christianity to justify their views. Supporters of slavery, like the KKK, fought to
maintain a White Christian America. The
comparison of the two religions shows why the discrimination against Muslims is
so unfair. Any religion or idea can be misused
by extremists. Of course there are good
Muslims, who support peace, and bad Muslims under terrorists groups like ISIS. The main concern of any issue should be the
recognition of every side of the story.
How do you
raise awareness on the negative perceptions of Muslims or any other groups? Do you focus
on smaller, specific audiences and then progress towards a bigger scale?
