Psyche of the Terrorist

Response to: Monster, Terrorist, Fag: The War on Terrorism and the Production of Docile Patriots

What really stood out to me in this reading was the psychological side of terrorism. This is not just because I am a psychology student, it’s because I never hear of the personality defect model being addressed or brought up when it comes to this issue. In the reading, the authors make it easy to see that the extremely dysfunctional family, abuse, loneliness, and struggles with sexuality are very possible reasons of a “monster” in the making. The failed psyche of a terrorist not only informs readers about how they come to be, but it also puts a human face on a labeled group of people. The failed psyche in no way justifies their actions or the lives that they have taken, but it reminds us that although terrorists have inflicted devastating damage in history, they are people with their own individual histories.

Question: Are their different perspectives/portrayals of terrorists globally? Or are they seen in the same light everywhere?
