In “Empire of Death
and the Plague of Civic Violence”, the author describes several types of
murder in our society. Before reading this article, I was thinking I live in a
relatively peaceful society, which has less war, poverty and murder. However,
murder, including serial murder, mass
murder and race murder, is happening quite often worldwide, especially in the latter half of twentieth century. Just
as author said, “the act of murder does not take place in a social vacuum”.
Because of social complexity and individual distinction, now I realize that it
is impossible to eliminate killings completely in the world. Although murder
could not be forbidden completely, I think government should increase penalties
on perpetrators. Also, since many murderers are mentally ill, to provide more alleviating pressure, psychological dredge
and society care could be a good way to decrease number of potential murderers.
Question:
Is there a good way
to tell children or teenagers about these things? Then they can understand how to protect themselves.
