In this article, the author brings up the controversy between people who view the Vietnam syndrome as positive and others who disagree with its idea. This goes to show that there are two sides to every story - like the other readings in this class, there were opposing ideas about ADHD and student-led protests. I believe that the Vietnam syndrome is a not an act of cowardice; it is a way for the military to hold back and prevent another loss in a war. I do not want the number of casualties to exceed our expectations, and risking the lives of many soldiers for the greed of the government is not plausible, especially with the previous, questionable choice of intervening in war.
However, I do agree that the relative distance of certain events affect the ideology of students. Since this information is not contemporary, my knowledge is lacking; therefore, I do not have many opinions on these topics. I live in a safe society without worry for another war to occur. I wonder how different I would feel if I were stuck in that situation. How exactly did people react, and how different would our laws regarding war be if we had won?
In the reading, the author mentions that Iraq carries many similarities to Vietnam.
