Throughout
the history of the United States, women and people of color have faced
oppression. They are put down and rejected constantly by society due to gender
and racial stereotypes and this affects their performance in academia and in
the corporate environment. Circumstances are even more intense for an
individual who is a woman of color. However, conditions for women of color have
been improving and things can only get better from here. This reading reminded
me of myself because I graduated from a small, all girls, Catholic high school
in San Francisco where a majority of the students that attended were women of
color and had parents who immigrated to the United States. For many of us, it
was a big accomplishment because we were able to defeat the norms of society
and became first generation college students. We are paving the way for future
generations to come as young leaders who have worked hard to get to where we
are today.
How would our world today be different if women did not
surpass the stereotypes of society?
