In the
article, “Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans”, there is fear and anger in
the words of author Soya Jung. She not only brings up the sorrowing loss of
African Americans from police brutality in the United States, but also draws a
disturbing comparison between the United States systematic treatment of African
Americans, and the treatment of Asian peoples in the past. She points out that
like the enslavement of African Americans and the struggle by the system to
make the collective group of African Americans second-class citizens, Asian
peoples have also been victims of occupation and threatening acts by foreign
entities. To many informed Asian Americans, like Soya Jung, these similarities
are horrifying especially during a time of social unrest in the United States.
As she states at the end of her paper, “Asian Americans often end up somewhere
in the chasm between blackness and whiteness”, she shows her worry and distrust
for the treatment of her people, a worry that all people of color may have to
endure.
As there is
many informed and well educated Asian Americans in this class, does anyone else
have the same fears and connect the same dots that Soya Jung does?
