In Soya Jung's article Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans, she discusses the sociological and historical reasons that Asians can empathize with the struggle of black people in modern America. She points to the fact that Asian Americans across the spectrum have oppression in their blood. What was particularly striking, however, was her second point that both Asian and African Americans fall outside the traditional power structure in America. No matter how much people push the "model minority" myth, the reality is that Asian Americans will never fall on the white side of "the color line". Asians will continue to be seen as non-white and receive the discrimination that comes with non-whiteness, which is why Asians must side with black Americans to resist the existing power structure. This leads us to a potential issue, however: how open will the #blacklivesmatter community be as a whole to Asian Americans joining in the fight?
