Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde’s Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia is
eye-opening. Never would I ever have thought about the struggle of colored
women in the world of academia. Ironically, in a world where lessons of
discrimination and injustice are frowned upon and taught to students so that
they do not follow suit, these issues continue to exist. As students, we don’t
see what goes on behind the scenes. We don’t worry about the lives of our
professors, nor do we care. However, what we should worry and care about is the
torturous inequality that some of our teachers encounter because of
discrimination. If more people were aware of the corruption that occurs in
places where corruption should be intolerable, the corruption could be curbed
or even eliminated with their voices combined. Prior to Valverde’s situation
being made public, support was gained worldwide and she finally won the battle.
It seems that, for victims in such a position as Valverde, change can only be
achieved as long as others are made aware of the issue and are motivated enough
to fight for the change. How could a victim spread awareness of their hopeless
situation while minimizing the risks that come along with it as well as getting
other people to care and fight along with them?
