The
article "Asian
Pacific Americans’ Social Movements and Interest Groups" from Geron et al. discusses the variety of
movements that represent the diverse range of API identities and fight to
separate those identities from umbrella terms like "Asian American".
This is an immensely important distinction that not only maintains different
Asian identities in America, but increases visibility of the specific problems
we face in this country and abroad. BEIng Filipino, I found one
personally significant example from this article: the movement to remove
American military presence in the Philippines. After being an invaluable ally
to the States for decades and maintaining an amiable political relationship,
many Filipinos felt they deserved the right to autonomy. Even with the US
withdrawing from the Philippines, problems still linger. These include environmental cleanup, as mentioned by the article, and Americans, civilians and military alike, being involved in the sex trafficking business. The struggle for
recognition by the powers-that-be in America continues today and will continue
for the foreseeable future. This brings up my question: with the friendly relationship between the Philippines and America, why hasn't action taken place sooner?
